Welcome to
R.M. of
Alexander
Only 130 km northeast of Winnipeg, lies the R.M. of Alexander.
Stretching from the eastern shores of Lake Winnipeg east into the
Whiteshell and north into the Canadian Shield, this 1,521 sq km region is
serviced by six modern highways. To it's year-round population of 2,399
(which increases to over 10,000 in the summer months) it offers parkland,
beaches, forest, agriculture, industry and the amenities of both urban and
rural settings. It is also the hydro power centre of Manitoba.
Alexander's history richly mirrors the development of Western
Canada. The wildly beautiful Winnipeg River is part of the oldest fur
trading route in the province. La Verendrye and his sons first explored
the area in the 1730's and made it part of their regular route. In 1870,
the Red River Expeditionary Force travelled the same path to confront
Louis Riel's metis.
The 20th Century saw the mass harnessing of electricity by Manitoba
Hydro on the Winnipeg River. Three of its six generating plants lie within
the R.M. of Alexander. In 1995, Alexander began "golden anniversary"
celebrations as it was incorporated officially on January 1, 1945.
Cottage Country
Get away from it all in Alexander! water sports, walking and
hiking, cross country skiing and snowmobiling are pursued in some of the
most pristine land in the country. Summer or winter, Alexander lures the
nature lover.
Alexander is cottage country containing beautiful, world-famous
beaches. Many love to escape the city life for a weekend in Alexander,
while others love the blue sky and green forests so much, they decide to
settle permanently in the area.
Wildlife such as moose, deer, foxes, wolves, coyotes, bears and both
snowy and grey owls are in abundance in the region's lush, green forests
while species of birds and fish are too many to mention.
When the need to get away from it all hits, Alexander has something
for everyone.
Industry and
Agriculture
The real estate motto of location, location, location,
seems to have been created for industry in Alexander. Centred around
Pine Falls, Powerview and St. George, the area is
very accessible to Winnipeg, a major distribution point. Modern highways
and a Canadian National Railway line allow easy access in all directions
to and from Alexander. The district also has an abundance of inexpensive
and readily-available hydro power.
Agriculture also plays a large role in Alexander. Stead is the sod
capital of Manitoba and ships sod and peat moss as far south as Texas.
A thriving wild rice industry is also carried out within the confines of
Alexander.
Further economic activity in the area includes commercial fishing on
Lake Winnipeg as well as mining just to the north of the Bird River area
at Bernic Lake. New construction starts are steadily on the increase.
There is certainly something for everyone in Alexander.
